• Anxiety & depression from job change

From Nightfox@999:1/15 to All on Wed Oct 7 17:24:39 2026
I was laid off from my last job in September 2025.. I finally got a job offer and started in July. I'm not sure how much detail I should share as this will appear online, but suffice it to say, I've faced pretty strong anxiety since starting this job and maybe a bit of depression too, due to some factors at this job. I talked to my doctor about it, and even started on anxiety medication, which I think may be helping reduce the anxiety, though I've been feeling a bit tired during the day. I've heard mornings can often be a good time to take the anxiety medication, but I've heard for some people it could make you feel a bit tired, and in that case it could be taken at night.. I wonder if I should do that.

I've also always been nervous about starting anxiety/depression medication. I've heard once you start, you can't just stop, as you'd have to taper down. I don't like the idea of being dependent on taking medications, but I guess it is what it is.

I also have quite a bit of credit card debt from being unemployed, but hopefully I can pay that down now. I also have a bit of performance anxiety when I start a new job, and I hope I am able to stay long enough to pay down at least a good portion of my debt. This is the first time I've had debt this significant.. Also, I've been hearing the job market sucks and has sucked for a few years now. I'm a bit scared of that, actually..

Anxiety & depression runs in my family (from my mom's side), and I've had periods of depression before, though I eventually got through them without medications before.

My anxiety is primarily handled with anti-psychotics, and a huge dose of anti-depressants... (300mg Welbutrin and 40mg prozac). I was on a really
high dose of anti-anxiety meds (klonopin 2mg 2xday), but now I'm on .5mg
1xday as needed, which seems to work pretty well. I only need to take it once every week or so.

As a former police officer, I found that diet can sometimes play a factor in depression.
In my 24 years of service, I came into contact with tons of people suffering from it.

Also, breathing exercises may help reduce some stress.

There are probably free clinics that can help you. I understand your reluctance to take
medication. I got an unexpected call one day from Walgreen's corporate to review my
medications. They were very helpful in letting me know which might conflict with others
and gave me some good advise.

I would ask your pharmacist if the medication they prescribed is the right one, or if there
is something better available. Nobody knows more about prescriptions than your
    pharmacist.

Good luck, my friend. For your health and your new job.

I was prescribed Prozac 20mg once a day. I've been taking it in the mornings, as I've heard that's often the best, but I recall reading that it could make you feel sleepy and if so, you could take it in the evenings. I feel like most days I've been a bit sleepy, but at night I've sometimes had a hard time falling asleep or will wake up at night and have a hard time falling back asleep. Did you have similar symptoms?

Yeah, I think that's a definite factor. Usually I've been lucky in that I haven't had to accumulate much debt until now.

Also, breathing exercises may help reduce some stress.

I've heard that, though I haven't tried it.

There are probably free clinics that can help you. I understand your reluctance to take

I imagine the doctor would be fairly knowledgeable about it too. I've been using a Costco pharmacy, and when I picked up the Prozac, the pharmacist there was fairly quick with me (almost seemed impatient) and just said something like "Most poeple have no problems with it, and it's probably good to take it in the morning", or something like that.

Good luck, my friend. For your health and your new job.

    Thanks!

I find it to be a stimulant along with my Welbutrin. Most days I sleep all
day any way... And night! I just sleep all the time...

I can't sleep all the time.. Maybe once I retire that wouldn't be as much of a problem, but that's about 20+ years away for me.

I wish I wasn't so tired all the time. I'm 57. I haven't worked in almost 30 years. I'm schizo-affective depressive type. My anxiety is severe, my
ability to work in stressful situations doesn't exist. I totally freak out
at the slightest inconvenience and can't deal with any thing out of the ordincary just generally in life. Needless to say, I can't hold a job with that problem.

Have you tried going out for a nice peaceful walk, or taking up a non-stressful hobby that involves some form of exercise? I always found that I am less tired after exercise than I am just sitting at home with nothing to do.

When I am at home, I spend too much time on the computer and watching TV. I find myself falling asleep during my TV time. I need to get out more.

I go for walks with my mom 3 times a week in the morning. When I get home,
I'm even more exhausted. And they're only 20 minute walks. (10 minutes each way).

Makes me want to try Yoga. I've heard great things. We have yoga classes in my
