I recently had a DEXA scan which showed the bone density as osteopenia, a condition where bone mineral density is lower than normal, a stage before osteoporosis. I am supposed to repeat in two years.
To prevent bone loss, I was advised to avoid smoking, eat a healthy, balanced diet with lots of fruits, vegatables, calcium. I was told to exercise every day and that walking, jogging and other activities make you bear your own weight are particularly helpful, as is weight training.
I was advised to get at least 1,200 mg of calcium daily, to get at least 800 to 1,000 IU vitamin D daily, and to go outside for exposure to the sun, which helps your body absorb Vitamin D into the bloodstream.
I was also advised to limit alcohol.
I am posting this because I feel it is a necessary thing to have done as we age.
