Mike,
Sometimes good things can come from bad. We all do what we can
to make every day the best day possible.
I played Santa Claus to a lady friend and her significant other this past Saturday. Since the US Government Shutdown (a redundancy in terms, if there ever was one), is still going on...they didn't get their SNAP (food stamp) benefits this month.
Since I have fewer bills from November through February, I was able to help them with the following items:
1) Fifteen Hormel Compleats Chicken and Rice Combo. These microwave meals only take 60 to 90 seconds to heat in the microwave oven. While still good, I had gotten burned out on them. They do have several other varieties. I also still have several varieties of 3 minute microwave pizzas from Kroger. My newest favorite is barbecue chicken. The only one I don't care for is the Supreme,
ith
all the hot peppers, etc.
2) Sixteen 60 watt light bulbs. I wasn't using them, and either 20 or 40 watts is plenty for me...the less light though, the better.
3) A tablet my late Mom had bought that I could not get to work. I found a charger
for it, plus a "stick pen", and I gave it to the lady friend.
4) Four boxes of Kleenex tissue (I still have 5 unopened boxes here).
5) $120 cash.
I took the 3 of us out to eat at a Waffle House near where they live, but had to take Lyft to/from there, since I don't drive anymore.
I told them to "not sell or squander that stuff, or Santa won't visit again". I
have heard of people going to area food banks, getting a ton of stuff, then going
to a store and selling it. Some get caught doing so, and they are arrested and fined...then banned from going to any other food bank for life.
I never signed up with the SNAP, as they told me it'd only get me $20 a month. I
felt that "it's more trouble than it's worth".
It was a combination Thanksgiving/Christmas meal for us, and while it wasn't turkey and all the trimmings, I know it made them happy (especially her).
I told them that "if I couldn't afford it, I wouldn't have done it". But,
hen
you can help someone out, it makes all the difference in the world.
Daryl
