Jeanne de Clisson, "the Lioness of Brittany," was a former noblewoman who became a
privateer to avenge her husband after he was executed for treason by the French king.
Sir Francis Drake was an Elizabethan sailor and navigator, and the first Englishman to
circumnavigate the globe. He was also a privateer.
Sir Martin Frobisher was an English explorer and privateer who made three voyages to
the New World: first, looking for the Northwest Passage, and later, seeking treasure.
Captain William Kidd was highly successful Scottish privateer accused of piracy. He has
become part of the enduring connection of pirates with buried treasure.
Jean Lafitte was a hero of the War of 1812, a privateer, and a pirate, leading the
Barataria Pirates of Louisiana.
Henry Mainwaring, English lawyer, soldier, author, seaman, and politician. For a time, he
was a pirate based in Newfoundland.
Grainne N˙ Mhaille, aka Grace O'Malley, Irish chieftain, seafarer, and pirate who led her
clan along Ireland˙s west coast.
Christina Anna Skytte accompanied her brother and her fiance as they pirated the Baltic
coast.
Thomas Truxtun was a privateer during the Revolutionary War. He was appointed by
George Washington as one of the original six Commodore captains of the newly established U.S. Navy.
Jan van Haarlem, "Moerat Reys de jongere," was the first President and Grand Admiral
of the Corsair Republic of Sale, Governor of Oualidia, and a Dutch pirate. He was one of
the most notorious of the Barbary pirates from the 17th century and the most famous of
the "Sale Rovers."
