From Matthew Munson@21:4/108 to All on Sat Sep 26 20:45:26 2026
It seems there is a counter culture movement where people would rather
buy cds and vinyls instead of streaming their music. Sadly loads of
music I like is out of print, so you have to end up hunting down what
    you want.

When I first started when I was 12/13 in 1992, I bought stuff just to
buy stuff. Now its more of the genre of music that I usually listen to.
I think its largely just box sets and import limited editions of a music release.

In a world where a digital license is required to play games, and where you don't
really "own" your games anymore, I can see why this movement is growing.

I would still rather have hundreds of mp3's over cd's though.

    Buy the CD.
    Rip the CD.
    Listen to the MP3.
Store the CD securely as backup. (Or listen to it in your 2000s-era
    car)

    Works for me!

Yep, I'm part of that CC myself for years. I never sold/dropped my old collection of CDs (I have like 100+) and I regret leaving all my tapes behind when I moved to CDs at the edge of centuries.

I started collecting Vinyls cince 2015 and all CDs are digitalized on my own NAS and Emby so I can listen at any device at home and that's my streaming service.

Spotify and other suck. I only use Sound Cloud if I want to discover some niche and then go and buy album on vinyls or CD (still tempted to build up cassettes library!!!)

Idea is simple. as I liked old times with last.fm to discover new artists and albums via its recommendation system I still was then rather listening via album from song one till last.

Spotify and YT enshitified it only to be focused on random tunes which just became noise to promote their engagement system.

This is not how I like to listen to music.. I like knowing what I listen too. come back to it, listen album song by song and after few sessions knowing exactly what the next tune will be and I can sing it in my mind or hum it...

more relaxing.. more music engaging not streaming vendor engaging.

This whole Web 2.0 with social engagement crap killed us in many ways... and I'm actually glad that bringing back old-ways of listening to the music was actually one of the easiest steps to back off this madness.

I'm old enough as many of us are, to have thrown away vinyl, cassettes, VHS, CDs, DVDs, floppies the works :)

I still however, buy the odd vinyl, VHS and CD and think it's rather nice that they've become collectors items again.

I would still rather have hundreds of mp3's over cd's though.

I tend to have the CDs for the bands I really like. Then I rip them and store digitized versions in my rig.

Why settle for one when you can have both?

I don't like using the originals in my car. The interior of cars is subjected to temperature variations and the like. For cars I go full 90s and burn my own mix CDs, and I keep original CDs in safe storage.

Great, if you have the space. I went through several storage strategies before I just couldn't expand anymore.
