I've never met a person that I was aware of had participated in a cult. I've watched some documentaries on the topic, but wonder if any
echomail readers have experiences they could share.
I have not been in a cult myself, but have seen the fruit cake Jehovah's Witnesses with their signs on street corners. I find it amazing that people can promote something that they are not allowed to deeply study. The JW's do not do fact checking. They are given the "New World Translation" of the bible and expected to take it as God's Word. Well it isn't anywhere near God's word, it is a derivative work with "and's" and other text replaced or removed. They believe that they are the only group who will enter Heaven. Originally they thought that they were part of the 144,000 people who are servants of God and that there would be no more than 144,000 people saved. Well then (somehow) they managed to get more than 144,000 members so they had to change their doctrine to allow newbies into their cult. It is completely Evil. If you are part of a religious movement and you want to call it something other than a cult you necessarily need to be able to read texts that hold other viewpoints. You need to be able to study without being monitored. You NEED to be able to compare Bible versions, read books that are contrary to the group's teachings, and generally be open to study any and all books. You need to have an open mind. If that is not the case, may I propose that whatever group you are with is indeed a cult. Cults are destructive and lead you far from Jesus Christ. Their main difference between their teachings and pure Christianity is that the cults emphasize many works to work their way to Heaven. However, Jesus Christ made it known that it is the unmerited grace of forgiveness and surrender that brings people to Heaven, a gift of God and not something you can earn. Everyone is guilty of sin and the only perfect sacrifice for our sins is the redeeming work of Jesus Christ on our inner beings, the forgiveness being granted when He died for our sins, exchanging his blood for ours, him taking the penalty of sin upon himself and us being forgiven of all of our sins, receiving the holyness from God in place of the curse that Jesus Christ bore. In short Jesus exchanged his righteousness with our filth. God The Father now sees us as redeemed people and not those who are slave to sin anymore.
Cheers!

Go to Audible or Amazon and pick up "Kingdom of The Cults," it is a very detailed study of various cults and their background and the book presents a deep dive into everything to do with the main cults. It is complete and concise, There is also a companion book called "Kingdom of The Occult," which is also a fine read.
