I drank too much to claim anything realistic...

Met a rambuctious couple from Texas at the hotel-bar. They were hilarious and somewhat familiar with Alberta as our "Texas of the north".

I understand that. A little story I've not told before in public: when I was in the Army, I worked in the 4th Infantry Division headquarters, then at Fort Hood, Texas, in the logistics group. Our group commander had just made "full-bird" colonel. So I was invited to the post's officer club (I normally could not enter without an invite since I wasn't a commissioned officer or a warrant officer, so this was special) to a promotion party for the boss--his name escapes me now but he was a very kind man.

The waitstaff brough out trays carrying 40 shots of liquor at once and doing so several times that night. I was a designated driver--in return for my DD status, my then-wife and I had unlimited soda and snacks for the night as well as dinner paid for by my boss.

I had never seen, or have seen since, so many officers who are normally stoic so shit-faced. I mean, they got pissed drunk. I think I called about 20 cabs (ridesharing was not a thing in 1997) for them all.

The best part was on Monday when the colonel called me into the office. I reported to him and we had a nice conversation about how well I was doing and he gave me that Thursday and Friday off with pay as a thank-you for making sure they didn't make fools of themselves (or worse).

I like Alberta. I've heard a lot of good things about that province.
