• No turning back in US-Europe relationship

From Joseph Pereira@1:103/705 to All on Wed Jul 8 04:01:03 2026

If you harbor the illusion that the relationship between the US and Europe can ever return to the situation under Biden, you can truly forget about that.

All European leaders understand very well that the US and Europe are going to walk their own separate paths. This does not mean that hostilities must arise with the US, but it does mean that things will never be the same as before.

Sometimes we walk together, sometimes we choose our own way.

But we no longer fully trust the US. This has enormous consequences, including for the purchase of weapons and the storage of digital data.

Twice, Trump has violated that trust. The threat against Greenland and the constant threat of tariffs. But also the insulting of Canada in the G7, and colluding with Russia at the moment Ukraine desperately needed support. None of this will be forgotten anytime soon.

Trump always sides with the party he predicts will be the winner. Europe needs to show its teeth a bit more often and therefore provide enormous support to Ukraine now. Russia is going to be defeated, and Europe is going to let Ukraine do it, without serious American help.

Russia sows unrest wherever it can, and unfortunately, there are quite a few Europeans and Americans who are susceptible to that.

The final result will likely dispel the delusions among those pro-Russian groups. But how long that final result—the defeat of Russia and its withdrawal from Ukrainian territories—will take... No one knows.

Europe's self-confidence will increase significantly as a result. That, too, creates further distance from the US.

Trump has definitively brought an end to the American politics that emerged after the Second World War. The world is now looking for a new world order. A Europe with a lot of self-confidence would be a good thing.
