The mechanics of how the teenager was caught remain a point of concern
for digital privacy advocates. The MVD stated that the alleged offense
was discovered "during operational and investigative measures by officers of the Center for Countering Extremism of the Regional Ministry of Internal Affairs." It is currently unclear exactly how authorities intercepted his specific internet queries while he was using a VPN.
...While the Kremlin recently altered course on some
bureaucratic VPN fees , its willingness to prosecute a teenager merely
for listening to a song proves that the governments war against
censorship circumvention tools has only intensified.
I wonder how they "caught" him. Maybe it was a slip-up or an admission in
social media?
Otherwise.. VPNs are not as private as one is told? Or.. it was a VPN with
a lousy reputation?

Sad. I wonder what song that was. It probably wasn't very good anyway.
It could be a state run VPN and/or one that has agreed to cooperate with the current Russia administration.
I know there has been talk of Russia
cracking down on what we'd think of as "legit" VPNs, but I cannot
remember if they have implemented any such measures or not. I do believe that they have a state run VPN that citizens are allowed to use, and have little doubt that it does not protect them from government snooping.

I also wondered that. I re-read the article a couple of times to see if
I was missing it!

Yeah.. and operated like a honey pot to spy on users and lassoo potential users for "criminal" activity.
