A 22-year-old man has appeared in court over a crash in Auckland's Penrose which killed a member of the Filipino community earlier this month.

Inspector Peter Raynes said at the time a car was seen travelling at high
speed on Great South Rd, in Penrose around 2pm on March 16. Officers said
they signalled for it to stop but the speeding vehicle then collided with two other cars.

The man, who has been granted interim name suppression, appeared in the
Manukau District Court charged with reckless driving causing the death of
    Jesan Tampus.

He also faced a charge of reckless driving causing injury to a second
    Filipino man.

Tampus died at the scene, while the second Filipino man was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

1News was told today he was no longer in intensive care. Another man received minor injuries in the crash.

Members of the Filipino community were in court for the accused man's first appearance.

The defendant also had a group of supporters in court. He entered no plea and would appear again in three weeks. He has been remanded on bail.

The court has asked for a mental health assessment to be carried out.
