A woman has been charged over a fatal crash between a car and bus carrying school children attending a kapa haka competition in Rotorua last year.

The crash, which occurred on Te Ngae Road at around 9.20pm on November 6, killed 23-year-old Teleia Thompson, who was a passenger in the car.

The driver and a second passenger were critically injured, with St John treating 31 people for a range of injuries. A total of five people were taken to the hospital following the crash.

Today, police said another passenger from the car, a 26-year-old woman, had been charged with being a party to dangerous driving causing death, party to four counts of dangerous driving causing injury, and perverting the course of justice.

She was due to appear in the Rotorua District Court today.

Police said enquiries were continuing with the driver of the car.

According to RNZ, the bus was carrying tamariki from Gisborne's Kaiti School and three were taken to the hospital after the crash.

They had been staying in Rotorua while competing at Te Mana Kuratahi - a kapa haka competition in Tauranga - and were on their way back to their accommodation.
