A telco is working to repair six damaged cables after suspected vandalism cut internet access to hundreds of homes on Auckland's North Shore.

A Chorus spokesperson said the company received reports of broadband outages
in the North Shore area of Auckland late on Thursday night.

Technicians arrived on scene shortly after midnight to assess the issue and found six damaged cables.

"The location of the damage presented health and safety issues, so our field teams returned early Friday morning to begin the work," the spokesperson said.

Chorus said crews had been working "around the clock" since, prioritising
fixes based on the number of customers served by each cable.

They said the process required splicing and re-joining individual connections
    - described as "meticulous work in difficult conditions and location".

"Originally, around 950 connections were affected. [The] most recent update from our field team shows 150 connections restored so far.

"While we suspect the original cause to be vandalism, we are still investigating as the work continues. Our priority right now is to restore customers' services - which will return gradually as our field teams
    progress."

Chorus apologised to affected customers for the inconvenience caused.

Some residents shared their experiences on social media, asking others what
the cause of the outages was.

"Still no internet in Albany on home package. Over 24 [hours] now. Does
anyone know what the problem is?" one person commented.

Another said: "It is on Chorus outage site... appears most of the North Shore has outage but it's been a day and still appears no progress on the outage map."
