Police are working to determine whether a home break in that left a resident injured and the discovery of a critically injured man on a nearby street in Wellington's Miramar in the early hours of this morning are linked.

Residents at a Darlington Rd address called police when an intruder was found inside their home at 2am.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch said one occupant received minor
injuries following an altercation with the suspect who fled before police arrived.

"Three others at the house were unharmed."

A police dog unit tracked the intruder for several hundred metres north of
the bus turnaround on Darlington Rd until the trail was lost, Leitch said.

Police on patrol then found an unconscious and critically injured man near
the intersection of Camperdown Rd and Totara Rd at around 2.30am.

"The victim was taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition," he said.

Leitch said police were making a "number of inquiries" into both incidents
and were working to determine if they were linked.

"There will be a visible police presence in the area while we carry out this work and speak with residents."

It was possible the intruder had gone to other addresses in the immediate
    area, he said.

"Police are asking that residents on upper Darlington Road (north of
Camperdown Road), and residents near the intersection of Camperdown Road and Totara Road to report any unusual or suspicious activity overnight.

"We are also asking residents to check their sections and yards for any items that may have been stolen or discarded by the offender, described as a tall
man of thin, athletic build, wearing a white cap."

Anyone with relevant information or CCTV footage should contact police on 105.
