A large industrial fire in Christchurch has sent black smoke billowing across the east of the city this afternoon.

Fire and Emergency NZ were called to Maces Rd in Bromley at around 12.52pm on Monday.

Ten crews from Anzac, Christchurch City, Woolston, Spreydon, Wigram and
    Redwood are currently in attendance.

"If the smoke is impacting your property, please close all doors and
windows," a Fire and Emergency spokesperson said.

"Please stay away from the area to allow our crews to safely extinguish this fire."

It comes after smoke from a large controlled burn in Christchurch's northeast drifted over parts of the city.

Fire and Emergency NZ said the burns beside Bottle Lake Forest Park had been taking place since March 26 and were expected to take place for another week.

"As a result of the burns, smoke has been visible across parts of eastern and northern Christchurch," a spokesperson said.

"Our crews have been in attendance on site, and you can be assured the
burnoffs are being carried out safely.

"If you see smoke in this area and are concerned then please locate the
source of the smoke/fire before calling 111, so that we are not unnecessarily responding our crews."

Signage on Lower Styx Rd and Golf Rd advised the public of these burns.

The Canterbury District (north of the Rakaia River) is now in an open fire season.
