Howdy, all!
Does anyone remember me from the '90s in FamilyNet? I spent most of mt timechstting with the very afctive members of an echo called "Off-Topic"
(sort of an "Anything Goes" but within FamilyNet standards, of course!
Good times. . .had several messages to me, plus a dozen or more other new ones to read in everet QWK packet (twice a week, I believe)
Anybody here still who remembers me? My slave name is "George Pope" but I've hbeen the Cyberpope many years now, since my first BBS call (to Agape here in BC) in '92. . . I was instantly hooked!
I was up to about 32 hours a day online (the math works -- I was running two computers simultaneously) & wasdialing out for about 6,000 minutes/mo of long distance, but I had a good plan, that capped my bill at $30 for long distance in Nortth America, & I got good value for a number of years until the great
Y2K scare led to most getting new computers, that came with free internet
disks (or CDs) & only supoprted WinModfems, not the DOSModems most of us
owned -- I kept my DOS M<odem, workling on my DOS machine, a true Blue IBM 80486 that was Cyberpope Central, running DOS 6.22 & Win 3.11(as a Shell to enable multiple DOS sessions at once); it had a 400 & an 80Mb HDD, doubled,. using the real Stac Technologies Disk Doubler, not the one that Microsoft initially stole then was forced to pay license for, thus leading to 6.22
being released after 6.2 so quickly. DOS IST GUT was my slogan -- I miss my DOS Machine, but it nee3ds someone t0o help me set it back up. (I'm half paralyzed, so some tasks don't come easy for me, but I manage -- I've gotten married, got a couple kids (one's 33(step-daughter) & the other is 13(son); I work FT emcompassing two jobs; I'm a Community Improvement Valet (the 104th); aconcept & [opsition I've created for those receiving government assistance(I get Disability to to up my PT paid employment, & to provide full medical coverage); the CIV works within the community to improve life for those who areat the bottom and/or fringes of society; the poor, the disabled, seniors, single parents. . .
I volunteer for a half dozen local organisations, mostly on boards (some governing, some advisory), I work with the city (Mayor/Council & Staff) as needed for infrastructure or bye-law changes. I also advocate to all three levels of government for people & for proactive legislation. Most of that I do as part of existing registered organisations (non-profit &/or charities)
We've successfully gpt a new tax repealed; we've got a provincial mandate for Poverty Response legislation; we've got a partial win with free transit for youth & children. We're working on this expanding to those on pensions/etc. & a sliding scal;e cost for those with better means.
Through it all, I praise God in Heaven for the love and strength to do
whatever I can do to contribute to reasons for Him to smile down on His Creation. Hesaved nmy lifeback in 1990 -- only 2% survive a burst aneurysm, & I'll bet 98% of the survivers had someone see them fall, so called 911. I was alone, getting dressed to go to work. Yet, here I am -- I had a 10% complication hit me, but neither did it do permant damage. I don't count
losing the use of one arm(total) & leg(partial--I can limp a bit) permanent damage, because I got enough brain left to function in spite of not having
both working.
Life is good. I wake up every morning, praising God for giving me life for a new day. I thank Him every night for theday's blessings, & pray on behalf of those I've met with great needs; prayer works--I know it without doubt.
So, yes,. I tend to babble on -- that'd be my being on the Autism Spectrum(Aspewrger's, as is my wife & both children!)
Any ASD in the house? Say HEY-EY!!!
Or even if not, just write back & tell me lots about you & where you are.
I'm in Richmond, BC, a sub-burp of Vancouver, BC, Canada (home to Winter Olympics 2010, & two Stanley Cup riots); Rivhmond is a beautiful city (over 1/4M people now, but it looks nearly ruyral, as we used to be the farming centre for most of BC & parts of Canada,. since we're on a giant Delta Isle, with the wonderful growing soil that provides. We're also sitting on a cloay-like mixture, meaning if the big quake hits here,. we'll shake to pieces & sink. . . We're actually below sea level, so no basements.
Amazingly, last November, the river & environs flooded badly from mass amounts of rain (sky river or some such they called it); every community got flooded except the one that's below sea level,. because our city council prioritized dikes & pumps. I prayed for safety for Richmond -- I don't discount that as having some effect in our being spared.
I spend a lot of time doing my CIV work via computer (emails, Zoom, & researching)
I think my next step is recruitment. I liaise with many local societies that are on the same page as me, but I can't direct them to my ends/intents. I can only suggest & inform. It would help to have numbers behind me.
Okay, I'm done, no really (for now! *G*)
Write back. . .NOW! JUST DO IT!!! ;) *LOL* I'm a joker. . .
