[1978 Music: A Year of Shredding Guitars and Witty Struts] Man, 1978 was a wild year in music. Got to thinking about it the other day while noodling around on my guitar. First up is Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption" -- that song still shreds like no tomorrow (MENSJOURNAL). That guy showed everyone what you could do with some serious chops and an innovative approach.

Then there's Sting from The Police, writing a song about his disappointment with Rod Stewart (FAROUTMAGAZINE) - talk about growing up in the biz. I get that kind of disillusionment, but it's also cool to see artists evolve their tastes. Joe Jackson at 71 still bringing his A-game -- and opening with "Is She Really Going Out With Him? " (THEGLOBEANDMAIL).

The guy's a genius; every song is packed with clever lyrics and sharp wit. That night in Toronto sounds like it was something special. Janet Jackson, the baby of the Jackson family back then -- she's come a long way from those photos in AOL to becoming one of pop's biggest stars.

And let's not forget 1978 brought us some rockers that are still cranked up today. (AMERICANSONGWRITER) "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" by Joan Jett, for example -- talk about a classic! What's your favorite song from 1978?

Got to love the old stuff that just holds its own against anything coming out now.
