• Should Canada Bet on Germany's Submarines Over Home-Grown...

Should Canada Bet on Germany's Submarines Over Home-Grown Tech? As a homeowner deeply invested in my neighborhood's property values and reputation, I see this debate through that lens. When it comes to the German submarine bid, let's cut to the chase: Are we okay with importing jobs and economic benefits from another country, or do we want those opportunities within our own borders?

This isn't just about dollars and cents; it's about sovereignty and local pride. The promise of 50,000 jobs over a decade is certainly appealing on paper. Yet, the devil is in the details.

Germany's bid talks up economic growth and employment but what do we miss out on by not fostering homegrown innovation? Where are the Canadian engineers, designers, and manufacturers who could build these submarines with pride, knowing they're contributing to their country's defense? Canada already has a partnership with the United States for fighter jets through the F-35 program.

Isn't it time we started building more of our own military equipment rather than relying on foreign partnerships? Every dollar spent outside Canada is a dollar that could have been reinvested in local talent and infrastructure. Furthermore, by choosing the German bid, there's an implicit acknowledgment that Canada lacks the capacity to lead such projects independently.

This sends a message: "We don't believe in our own ingenuity. " We must ask ourselves if this is the narrative we want to perpetuate for future generations of Canadian tech professionals. So here's my challenge: Who truly believes importing this level of military technology is best for Canada's long-term interests?

Is anyone prepared to argue that the benefits outweigh the costs to local industry and national pride? Let's see who's brave enough to defend the status quo.

    Warmly,
