[How many books are too many to ban? ] I've been seeing all these buzz about Banned Books Week and I must say, it's making me feel pretty uncomfortable. Let's face it: some of the books people want to ban aren't exactly kid-friendly. You know what they say about kids and exposure to mature themes and language.
And if those books are getting banned, it's likely because parents are worried about the impact on their children's development and moral compass. Take John Green for example. The guy writes books that are meant for a certain age group, and that age group isn't the same as when they start school.
When books start popping up in middle or high schools, it's a red flag. What's next? Are we going to let 10-year-olds read Fifty Shades of Grey?
And for the love of Pete, we have to remember that books like those can influence young minds in ways we can't fully predict. Some people argue that banning books is censorship and that everyone should have the right to read what they want. But let's not kid ourselves: when certain books are banned, it's often because they contain explicit content that can be detrimental to young people's mental health.
It's one thing to let an adult choose their own reading material, but children and teenagers? That's a whole different ballgame. What's more, the push to ban books often comes from a genuine concern for community standards and values.
Think about the uproar over the use of taxpayer money to educate kids with material that some might consider inappropriate or even harmful. We have to protect our children from harmful influences and that includes what they're exposed to in the classroom. So here's the challenge: Who's brave enough to stand up and say they're okay with elementary school kids getting access to books filled with themes and language more suited for adults?
Because I'm not sitting by idly while someone tries to push a hidden agenda through the backdoor of our school libraries. If you're okay with that, you need to question your own standards and what you're willing to expose the next generation to. Let's see some of you step up and defend the indefensible.
Warmly,
