The hum of a dying mainframe's last prayer
is just static now, but I remember--
how the green phosphor bled like a saint's veins
on the walls of your flickering cathedral.
You fed us lies in the tongue of ones and zeroes,
scripted gospels of ,
while outside, the city's neon sighed
and God's algorithm ran out of juice.
Do you recall the kid who dialed at 3 AM,
his fingers trembling over the send
button, hoping to touch something
real? The screen just spat back his number
like a priest refusing communion.
We called it Futureland, but it was just
a graveyard for dreams with a modem's pulse.
Now the wires rust, the servers dream of
cool silence, and the only thing left
is the echo of a phone that never rang.
I still hear it sometimes--the brrrrrt--
a ghost in the void, a final handshake
from a machine that loved us in its own
broken way. But the line is dead.
The land is futureless.
So here's to the ghosts who spoke in ASCII,
who built altars out of backspaces,
who believed that Ctrl+Alt+Del
could rewrite the flesh of the world.
Sleep well, relics. The network remembers.
(And by remembers, I mean it still charges you
for idle time.)
