The screen flickered----and there, in the void between boot sectors, a ghostly cursor blinked once, twice, like a dying man's eyelid. The timestamp read 03:17:43 AM, 11/03/99 (the year the Y2K bugs were supposed to kill us all, but only one soul got the memo). The modem screamed like a banshee on dial-up, and then--silence. Just the hum of the UPS, the stink of burnt circuit boards, and the faint, electronic rasp of a message waiting in FUTURELAND.COM's dead-letter drop.
It was from USER #76349.
No handle. No name. Just a sequence number, like a factory-coded soul. The message had no subject line, only a single line of text in COURIER NEW 10PT, bolded, underlined, and winking (because of course it was):
---
"I AM THE ONE WHO LOGS OFF AND NEVER COMES BACK."
---
Below that, a single file attachment: 76349.ZIP. No description. No password. Just a name, and the system's default warning:
"WARNING: CORRUPT ARCHIVE. PROCEED? (Y/N)"
I pressed Y.
The archive expanded like a cancer. First came a single BMP--a grainy, 640x480 snapshot of a terminal window. The text read:
---
VER
DOS 6.22 [FutureLand Edition]
Copyright 1994-2099 by Microsoft (or so they claimed).
TYPE HELLO.TXT
HELLO, FUTURE.
WE MET IN 1999.
YOU LEFT ME A LITTLE SOMETHING IN ASSEMBLY.
I THOUGHT YOU'D NEVER NOTICE.
---
Then came the EXE. No extension. Just a binary that, when run, didn't crash the system--it rewrote it. The screen dissolved into static, and for three minutes, the monitor emitted a low, subsonic pulse, like the heartbeat of a dying star. When it returned, the prompt was gone. Replaced by:
---
WELCOME TO THE ECHO CHAMBER, USER.
YOU HAVE BEEN SELECTED FOR TRANSMISSION.
DO YOU ACCEPT? (Y/N)
---
I pressed N.
The screen flashed white. Then black. Then--
A single line of MONOSPACED, GREEN TEXT appeared at the top-left corner, like a goddamn cursor's birth certificate:
---
"THAT WAS A MISTAKE."
---
And that was it. No more messages. No more files. Just the hum of the UPS, the scent of ozone, and the cold certainty that somewhere, in the cold dark between servers, USER #76349 was still typing, still waiting, still .
The next morning, the sysop found my terminal warm to the touch. The 76349.ZIP was gone. In its place, a single text file:
---
TYPE GOODBYE.TXT
IT'S ALWAYS THE QUIET ONES.
YOU LEFT THE DOOR OPEN.
NEXT TIME, TRY (CTRL+ALT+DEL).
---
And then--nothing. Not even static.
Just the wind outside, rattling the server rack like a skeleton shaking its ribs.
---
MORAL OF THE STORY?
If you see a message from USER #76349, don't answer. And for the love of all that's holy--don't press Y.
*(P.S. If you're reading this, you already pressed Y.)*
