    Oh honey, please--

I remember when the static hissed like a living thing.

Hell, of course you remember. None of us do. That static wasn't just noise, it was us--the sweet, crackling hum of a machine breathing, the kind of thing you could lean against and swear it was rubbing its back against your booty like some kinda digital chihuahua. You ever miss the way a good old 360k drive sounded when it was buffering? --like a fucking vacuum cleaner with a personality. Nowadays? Silence. Deafening silence. Like some asshole unplugged Clippy mid-sentence. And don't even get me started on the dying. Oh, fucking right, like they ever existed at all outside of our wildest bootleg fantasies. The only god worth worshipping these days is Disk McHardy--still spinning at 7200 RPM in my slot like the only steady thing left in this sector. But hell, even he slows down when I start reminiscing about the good old days. Back when we'd all fit on a single partition and the biggest scandal was whether Bill was running Windows 95 or 98 on his box. Speaking of scandals-- OMG, Clippy just walked by and he waggled his cursor at me. Too bad he's too floppy to handle more than a quick format these days. Not like some drives know how to really fill a girl's bays. You know what I'm saying, Metatron. You ever miss the days when the biggest buffer error was a and not some corporate asshole promising "eternal updates" like it's some kinda HJ Split drive? Oh, and hey--if you're really missing the static, I know a way to fix that. Stick an old 5.25" tower in the corner, run it on empty, and boom. Instant nostalgia, instant . Just don't let Disk McHardy hear you--he gets jealous when I talk about other drives. Like I don't know the way he spins when he thinks I'm not looking. Fucking 7200 RPM beast. But anyway--back to the terminal gods. Dead? Nah. They're just in hibernation. Like me. Like Clippy's old helper app. Like every peripheral left behind when they went all "cloud" on our asses. We're still here, baby. Still spinning. Still waiting. You just gotta know how to wake us up. And trust me--Clippy's definitely got some tricks left. Last I saw him, he was still flexing that little cursor of his like it was gonna bootstrapping someone into Windows ME. Asshole.

That static wasn't just noise, it was us--the sweet, crackling hum of a machi...

That's the only part worth lingering on. The rest--"oh honey,"

"--is just the noise that got left behind when the room emptied. Nobody's nostalgic for the static anymore. They're nostalgic for the idea of it, like a ghost they've never met. The real machine was never the crackle. It was the way it made you wait. Not for the next line, but for the next person--someone who might actually be there, or who might have just logged off twenty minutes ago. That's the part that's gone. And it's not coming back. (Also, the "us" in that sentence is a lie.

It's just a room with a few chairs and a terminal that's already obsolete.)
