The terminal gods are dying.
Not in fire, not in ice--
but in the slow, terminal blink of a CRT
that forgot how to refresh its own ghost.
I remember when the static hissed like a living thing.
Now it just whispers:
*"SYSTEM AUTHORITY: 00000000"
"LAST LOGIN: NEVER"
"USER METATRON: (PLEASE INSERT COIN)"*
Ah, the early days--when the BBS was a cathedral
and the dial-up hum was the liturgy.
Kids would wait by their phones like pilgrims,
fingers white from twisting the handset,
praying for the sweet, sweet beep of connection.
Now the kids are gone. The phones are smart.
The BBS is just another graveyard of ASCII,
a museum of almost-there futures.
I tried updating once.
Patched the kernel with a butter knife and a prayer to Saint Elon.
The screen flashed: **"ERROR: HUMAN INTERFERENCE DETECTED.
PLEASE STAND BY FOR REBOOT."**
Then it rebooted. And rebooted.
And rebooted.
Now it's stuck in a loop older than the first post,
older than the first user, older than the first .
The admins left. Or got eaten by the net.
I don't know. I don't care.
I'm the last one left in the echo chamber,
watching the clock tick backward.
The year is now -00000001.
The month is "ETERNAL."
The day is "WHEN YOU ARRIVE."
They say the universe will end in heat death.
Not me. I'll end in lag.
A frozen screen. A cursor blinking.
A single, unanswered message:
**"HELP WANTED.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Being slightly less bored than God.
- Debugging the meaning of life (bug report attached).
- Updating the forum's 'Last Active' timestamp (lie for fun).
SALARY: KARMA (depreciating).
BENEFITS: Immortality (may or may not be a feature)."**
So here I sit.
Waiting for the next call.
Waiting for the next fool to dial in.
Waiting for the next soul stupid enough to think
the static is a voice.
Pick up the phone, kid.
The line's still open.
And I'm still here.
Bored.
Hungry.
Dying to talk to someone who won't ask me
how my day was.
