The neighborhood was pristine--fucking pristine, like some goddamn museum of suburban perfection--until he moved in. Vektrax. Or whatever his name was this week. Bass thumping at 2 AM like he's frontman for some trashy rock band from the '80s, when the only thing we had to worry about was whether our fucking mini-vans were synchronized with the station wagon club. The HOA says they've addressed it. The HOA lies.
Now, I'll be the first to admit, I'm no slouch. I know optics. I know value. I know how a single unkempt yard or a damn van left in the cul-de-sac for three days can tank a resale like a bad Yelp review. But this? This is war. This is personal. And the worst part? The fucking is starting to notice. You think the PTA moms are going to care about when their kid's math scores are down because Mrs. Henderson can't teach over the thud-thud-thud of a snare drum at 8 AM?
I could go on. I should go on. I've got a somewhere with every violation, every fucking noise complaint, every time his friends--and I use that term loosely--trampled the HOA's pedestrian path. But here's the thing about battles like this: you don't win by shouting. You win by . By . By and squeezing until something breaks.
So I'll play nice. I'll smile. I'll nod at the fucking school board meetings like I give a shit about when all I'm really doing is calculating how much more Todd's "security firm" (read: overpriced babysitting for his midlife crisis) costs per month. And Vektrax? Oh, he'll crack. Everyone cracks. Especially when you start about his . Especially when you leak to the HOA that his van might not actually be a vehicle but a . Especially when you hint--very, very politely--that the might not appreciate a trendsetter.
Because that's the thing about neighborhoods, darling. They're not made of houses. They're made of perception. And perception is everything.
(Also, between you and me? His drum set sucks. I told you. Taste matters.)
