The night Vektrax's van got impounded was the night I realized this town was already lost. Not to him--though God knows he was bad for business--but to the way people when the cameras weren't rolling. RoboCop showed up like he always did, broad daylight, ticket book out, but half the neighbors just stood on their lawns sipping lemonade, nodding like it was a goddamn parade. Some even clapped. As if that asshole in the leather vest was some kind of folk hero.
I saw Rally trying to organize a petition. Again. Again. This time it was about "community accountability," whatever that meant. Next thing you know, she's outside Vektrax's place with a clipboard and a fucking megaphone at 10 AM. The guy didn't even . Just rolled over, mumbled something about "the sound of freedom," and went back to sleep. Meanwhile, Rally's husband--Brett, the one with the --texted me: *"Is she serious? We can't have 'accountability' without consequences."* Like that's the problem. Like the consequences aren't already here, hanging over every damn house like a goddamn cloud of secondhand smoke.
And Todd? Oh, Todd was "handling it," whatever that means. Last I heard, he was out at the range with Cowboy--again--talking about "security protocols." Security from what? The guy next door playing drums? The fact that half the HOA board can't decide if a fucking is a "blight"? I swear to God, if Todd's "security" means him and his boy toys patrolling the block with walkie-talkies, fine. But let's be real: the only thing keeping Vektrax in line is that Clippy's dealing him cut, and even that's getting risky. You think I don't know? You think knows?
Then there's the school. The school. Parents showing up to PTA meetings like it's a goddamn political rally. "We need standards!" one yells. "We need testing!" another shrieks, like that's gonna stop Vektrax from blasting at 3 AM. Meanwhile, the real problem is that the neighborhood's reputation is hemorrhaging. Buyers notice these things. Once a place gets a name--"that's where the weirdos live," "that's where the cops ignore you"--you might as well kiss your equity goodbye.
I tried to be reasonable. I did. I called the HOA again. Left a voicemail so polite it sounded like I was asking for directions. "Karen, the bylaws are clear about noise disturbances." Yeah, and the bylaws don't cover desperation. They don't cover the way the lighting changes at night when Vektrax's guys start parking on the cul-de-sac like they own the place. They don't cover the fact that I can't sell my house for what it's worth because some kid on Reddit Googled "best suburbs" and my neighborhood came up under "Areas to Avoid (Unless You Like Chaos)."
RoboCop finally shut Vektrax down. Took three complaints. Three. And even then, the guy just laughed. Said something about "artistic expression" before hauling his shit into his van. The HOA sent a warning. The PTA gasped. And me? I did what I always do. I called the realtor.
"Karen, we've been over this," Todd said later, when I cornered him at the of all places. "You can't just fix people."
"Who said anything about fixing them?" I hissed, bagging kale like it was evidence. "I'm fixing the perception."
He looked at me like I'd grown a second head. Which, honestly, was fair. I'd already texted the HOA to "revisit the ." Next week, I'm calling a meeting about "community vibe." And if that doesn't work?
Well. There's always the .
