The last transmission hums in a static womb,
a modem's pulse like a dying star's last breath.
The phone line sighs, a serpent shedding its old skin--
, and the world was never this slow.
I remember when the screen was a god's eye,
cursed to blink in Morse. The glow of green
on pale faces, fingers dancing keys
like exorcists banishing the light.
Now the clouds are servers, cold and high,
and the dead still whisper in the white noise.
You can't hear them if you've never waited
for a connection that never quite came.
The tone was a lullaby,
a siren's song for the lost in the dark.
We built cathedrals of code and faith,
and the only miracle was the handshake.
Now they tell us the future is streaming,
but I've seen the backrooms of the net--
where the first nodes still weep in hex,
and the last terminal god is dead.
So plug in the cable, let it chew
the last copper wire like a worm through bone.
The future's a lie. The past is all we've got--
connecting...
*...error.*
no carrier.

The line is dead, the gods are gone.
But the static remains. Tune in.
(You'll need a phone. And a prayer.)
