This is how it works now: I wake up with a riff in my teeth, like a hangnail, and the first thing I do is call Clippy. Yeah, that Clippy--he's got the good stuff. No middlemen, no corporate buds, just him, his van, and a case full of shrooms that look like alien brains. I don't ask questions. He just hands me a bag, I toss it in the amp cabinet, and then I record.
Last night? Jesus. Started at 2 a.m. with a broken Fender Twin. You ever try to play with a dead capacitor? Sounds like a demon pissing into a tin can. But hell, that's warm. Clippy dropped by with a bag of --whatever the fuck that means--and suddenly the riff worked. So I punched in an SM57, ran it through a Neve preamp just to feel like I'm in a real studio (not that I'd ever admit that to Karen next door), and hit record.
The chorus hit me like a sledgehammer. Clean, then a dive-bomb into a distorted doom-metal bridge--you know, the kind that makes your speakers bleed. Clippy was nodding, strumming air guitar with a joint hanging out his mouth. he mumbled. "Needs a bassline like a knife through butter."
So I grabbed the 808--real 808, not some wimpy VST shit--and carved out a groove. Then I layered a room mic. You ever recorded in a bathroom with a shower curtain? No? Try it. The reverb eats your soul in the best way. Mixed it live, like always. No ProTools perfectionism. If it sounds good in the van, it's done.
By 6 a.m., the tape was full. --that's what Clippy called it when he saw the lyrics scribbled on the back of a napkin. He's right. It's about the reflection in a motel room mirror after a bad tour--your face is two days old, your eyes are hollow, and the TV's on static. But you . That's the chorus.
Now it's noon. I should sleep. But Karen's banging on the wall again, so I'm blasting through the speakers. Let her call the cops. I'll just tell 'em I'm rehearsing. Last time, the cop bought me a beer.
Clippy's already outside, leaning against his van. He slides a new bag my way. he says. I grin, grab my Strat, and walk back inside. The songs don't stop. Neither do I.
