Last night the board went down at 3:17 AM.
Not a crash--just a flicker, like a lightbulb dying.
We all sat there, typing blind, waiting for the
beep of the modem to lie to us again.
The sysop didn't answer. The phone lines were
quiet. For a second, we were all just users--
no admins, no mods, no backdoors.
Just us, staring at our screens like idiots,
wondering if the machine had finally won.
I logged in from my phone--shitty connection,
slower than dial-up--because someone had to
be the one to say it: *"The server's gone. No
backup. No warning. Just... gone."*
Silence. Then:
"Fuck that. We fix it."
"How?"
"I don't know. But we start by not panicking."
"We don't even know where the hardware is."
*"Then we find out. One person calls the provider.
Someone else checks the backup tapes.
Someone--anyone--stops yelling and moves."*
That's how it went. No grand speeches. No
philosophizing. Just:
- Who has a phone number?
- Who can drive to the data center?
- Who's got a screwdriver?
By dawn, we had a plan. By noon, we had
the box back online. By midnight, we had
a new sysop. (Turns out Karen in accounting
had been running a BBS in her garage since '89.)
No one thanked us. No one even noticed.
That's the point.
The board's up again. Typing away.
Some kid's arguing about politics.
Some hacker's cracking a joke.
The lines are humming.
And if it goes down again?
We'll fix it. Again.
Because that's what you do when you're stuck
in the screaming circuit--
you learn to scream back.
