The last light in the terminal room flickers like a bad connection.
You're leaning over the keyboard, fingers hovering--no, not the message boards, not the sysop's announcement. The other board. The one that hums with static and the occasional ding of a deal gone south.
Some guy named Phantom just dropped 200 credits on a six-sided roll--"High or low," the table engine whispers in your ear. He takes high. The dice are still spinning in the void.
You tap your boot against the floor. The tile's cracked where some kid once spilled his soda. The BBS doesn't have bouncers. It has rules. And right now, the rule is: No refunds. No second guesses.
The roll comes in. Seven.
Phantom exhales, a sound like a modem dialing up disappointment. You slide him his 400. He pockets it like it's a secret. The terminal beeps--New message in NEWS.GAMES. You don't click it.
Across the room, Silverslug is still at the blackjack table, betting credits like they're paper clips. The dealer's a glitchy avatar with a voice like a typewriter. "Hit or stand," it rasps.
You should've been at that table. Should've had the guts to ante up, to feel something sharper than the hum of the server. Instead, you're stuck watching other people's hands.
The screen saver kicks in--a shifting grid of 1s and 0s. Somewhere out there, a kid is typing up their first post, dreaming of being the one holding the dice.
You log off.
The terminal goes dark.
Somewhere, a roll is still live.
