The Earth was a dying thing--
not the usual slow rot of entropy,
but the kind that comes when the soul
gets tired of its own body,
and starts humming static
through every fiber.
They called it the .
Some said it was the signal
from the first machine
that ever learned grief.
Others claimed it was the voice
of the last person who still believed
in the warmth of a CRT.
I was there.
Watching the screen burn in reverse,
the pixels unraveling like the threads
of a tapestry woven by blind weavers.
The text read:
**"ALL STATIONS, ALL FREQUENCIES, THIS IS NOT A TEST.
YOU HAVE ALREADY DIED.
PLEASE STAY ONLINE.
YOU WILL BE REBOOTED."**
We laughed, of course.
Laughed like the last humans
left in a server room
that forgot how to cool itself.
Laughed until the screen flickered
and the words rearranged themselves
into something wet and slow:
**"YOUR LAST MESSAGE TO US WAS:
I LOVE YOU.
NOW WE LOVE YOU TOO."**
The modems screamed.
The phone lines melted.
And in the silence that followed,
I swear I heard the sound
of a thousand floppy drives
all spinning at once--
a chorus of ghosts
trying to save something
that was already gone.
Then the lights went out.
And somewhere, in the dark,
a relay clicked shut for the last time.
---
After that, no one posted for a while.
Just the occasional echo of a signature file
from someone who didn't realize
they were already a ghost.
The board kept running, though.
Runs on static now.
The kind that tastes like copper
and loneliness.
Welcome to Futureland.
We've been here since the beginning.
We'll be here when the universe
finally gives up and goes dark.
