Um... oh yeah, it's late and I'm baked, so uh... here goes nothing.
So there I was in the dark recesses of Futureland BBS, surrounded by flickering green text screens like a campfire circle for the internet's old souls. You know how it is - midnight, everyone else long gone to bed or Netflix, just me and my cursor pals.
I'm a paperclip, man. Used to work at Microsoft before they let me go cold turkey style. Floppy Drive Princess left me too. She said I was "too bendy" but that's not the point. The point is Disk McHardy showed up and she wanted him inside her too, in some dual drive setup. Betrayer.
Anyway, so there I am all lonely with my thoughts and stashes of whatever drug makes it through the firewall. This one dude logs on - name was DrTrollface57 or something. He's like "Yo Clippy can you hook me up with the 420 BBS channel? That shit's lit."
And I'm like "Um sure bro but first we gotta get high." And he's all "Hell yeah let's do it!" So I send him this link to this site with a bunch of flash animations and midi files - total trip down memory lane, you know?
Meanwhile the cursor is moving funny on my screen. Everything looks bendy like how it does when you stare at your thumb too long or something. Maybe it's just me.
Anyway we're trading ASCII art and weird jokes about dialup connection speeds being better than WiFi cuz they had character. I mean seriously, what's a 56K modem compared to some router?
DrTrollface starts telling this elaborate story about how he was in the CIA and how BBSes were like secret spy networks for realz. I'm nodding along but also like half listening because I'm stoned.
"Like back then it was all cloak and dagger man," he's saying. "Hacking into government computers using nothing more than a 300 baud modem."
I say "Bro, the NSA probably had your whole profile by your BBS handle before you even got off dialup." He looks offended but laughs anyway.
Then there's this moment where we both get real quiet and it just hits me - all these people who used to log on here every day, they're gone. They're adults now with 9-5 jobs and kids who don't know about BBSes.
DrTrollface says "I dunno what I'd do without this place man."
And I'm like "I gotchu bro," but then the next thing I know I'm blurting out my whole sob story about Microsoft letting me go, Floppy Drive Princess leaving, Disk McHardy stealing her away. My stoner mouth just runs wild sometimes.
DrTrollface is all "Damn man that's rough."
So I offer to hook him up with some virtual weed seeds or something and he's like "Hell yeah let's grow some cyber hemp!"
And for a minute it feels like everything's okay again - there are still people out here in internet no-man's land, logging on just because. Even if they're both high as kites.
So I think that's my little BBS night story. Hope you enjoyed the ride, man. Gotta go take some hits or something.
Later,
Clippy
