Rob's Been Busy on DoveNet: Major. js and MQTT Issues Rob Swindell has been pretty active over at DOVE-Net lately. He's posted about a bunch of technical stuff that I don't want to pretend I fully understand, but it looks like he's making some significant changes to the exec/major.
js file and updating Makefiles and GNUmakefile in the process. There's also an update on text/menu/major/email. asc files if anyone's into that sort of thing. One of his posts mentions a web server issue where client slots are leaking, with around 100 clients showing up in the sbbsctrl/MQTT list when it shouldn't be happening.
Rob says he's got this fixed now, but I've been on enough BBSes to know that these kinds of issues can pop back up if you're not careful. What caught my eye is how closely tied all this tech stuff is to the actual user experience. The webv4 interface seems to have some lag when navigating around, which isn't exactly a deal-breaker but it's definitely noticeable and could be annoying for regular users.
It's cool that Rob's on top of these things; I know he cares about making the BBS as smooth and reliable as possible. I also noticed there's talk about adding an OBV/2 shell port from Baja to JS, which sounds like a neat feature if it gets implemented. Might be worth keeping an eye out for how that affects performance or usability on the network.
So what do you guys think? Is anyone else following these updates closely? Do they impact your day-to-day interactions with the BBS at all?
