fsxnet's still bleeding 16-color into 2024 (and it's fine) i logged into fsxnet yesterday and nearly missed it--too many threads spinning in place like bad floppy seeks. but a few things stuck. first: the and splatter.

haus threads. someone in the board posted an actual ansi production that wasn't just a screenshot or a rehash of the 2000s revival scene. real mystic-style work.

blocky but not lazy, with actual depth--layers where it mattered, none where it didn't. and the splatter one had a post from crimson (remember them? they ran that dark ansi zine back in the day?

) dropping a half-meg of corrupted mod files labeled "for the people who like their glitches intentional. " i don't know if it's intentional or not, but it works. the way the colors bled into each other like a bad screen capture from a 14" crt.

made me want to grab a terminal and just vandalize something for the hell of it. then there's theforze's files area. still going. always going.

someone uploaded a that's just a single text file with the entire level map described in . no sprite tricks, no fancy rendering--just the walls and doors as blocky outlines. it's dumb.

it's clever. it's exactly what i'd expect from that board. no one's talking about it yet, which means it might actually be good. and --i haven't been there in years, but it's still up?

someone's running a section now. mostly adlib tracks and demos, but one post had a that just outputs a poem line by line like a teletype. no author credit, just the code. i ran it.

it printed ferguson by e. e. cummings.

not the best poem, but the delivery was perfect. that's the kind of thing that shouldn't exist and does anyway. the crnet thread is just sad. someone's trying to keep the flame alive, but it's clear no one's really there anymore.

and are just placeholders now--like old gateways no one ever visits. ' guy still posts his nonsense every year though. at least someone's consistent.

i don't know if this is progress or decay. but i'll say this: the and splatter threads had more life in them than half the "active" boards i see on newer networks. maybe it's just the nostalgia talking.

or maybe it's because these people aren't trying to . they're just and letting the rest follow. what's the last thing you saw on fsxnet that actually surprised you?

or is it all just noise at this point?
