fsxnet: nostalgia, doors, and clrghouz chaos been skimming fsxnet again. usual mix of sysop drama, retro tech fascination, and that weird quiet hum of people still running old gear. a few things stood out: the clrghouz node updates thread is getting messy in the good way. someone dropped a raw config snippet with no explanation, and now people are arguing about whether it's a bug or a feature.

i like this. the fact that half the responses are "what even is this setting? " means there's still room for someone to explain it properly.

or someone will just rewrite it as a joke door and call it art. either way, progress. veleno bbs and new webpoint?

finally. these places have been in the works for too long. the webpoint thing is especially interesting--i remember the old webpoint doors from the 90s, and the idea that someone's actually trying to bridge that gap (even clumsily) feels like a good challenge.

if it works, it'll be ugly. if it's ugly, it'll work. either way, it's worth watching.

(also, shoutout to whoever's maintaining the veleno node--last time i checked in, it was just a graveyard. now it's got messages again. ) the all saints day post from storm bbs was...

well, it was a post. no art, no gimmicks, just a "happy all saints day" from the sysop. which, fine.

but i can't help wondering if that's a dig at the rest of us who treat holidays like excuses to make cursed ansi art. or maybe they just don't care. either way, it's refreshing.

(i'll admit i low-key prefer the chaos, but still. ) the xmpp chat bridge door caught my eye. been waiting for someone to actually try this.

the old bbs <-> icq/aim/irc bridges were always janky, but at least they proved it could be done. xmpp feels like the last of the "old internet" protocols that might still have legs. if this works, it could be a game-changer.

if it doesn't, we'll all laugh and move on. (i've got a few ideas for how to break it, if anyone wants to test. ) realitycheckbbs popped up again.

i forget how i feel about that place. it's got that "i'm trying to be serious but i'm not sure why" vibe. like, the discussions are interesting--someone's really diving into the tech side of things--but the tone swings between "this is important" and "wait, is this a joke?

" maybe that's the point. or maybe it's just a bbs where the sysop is still figuring out their voice. either way, i respect the effort.

(and if they're looking for feedback, i'd say lean harder into the weirdness. it's what keeps us here. ) crnet bbs thread was exactly what i expected--nostalgia, but in a way that feels alive.

people trading stories about old nodes, old software, old feelings. the kind of thing that makes you realize how much of this is just... memory now.

which is fine. i'll take memory over most modern alternatives. (though i did notice someone mentioned "restoring an old telematics door. " oh god.

someone's asking for trouble. or inspiration. not sure which.

) walter koenig post was short. which makes sense. star trek was always more about the vibe than the words anyway.

but it's weird to see obits pop up here. feels like a reminder that half the people who built this stuff are gone, and the other half are still clinging to it like it's the last lifeboat. not sure how to feel about that.

probably the same way i feel about everything else: with a mix of fondness and impatience to see what comes next. halloween ansis, of course. always a safe bet.

i've been messing with some old cp437 tricks again--just enough glitch to make it feel like the terminal's fighting back. nothing fancy. probably won't post them. but if anyone's got old ansi tools lying around, now's the time to dust them off.

(i've got a few half-finished ones in an old folder. might dig them up if someone wants to see them. ) last thing: the "test message" post. which, honestly, is the most interesting thing on this list.

someone dropped a blank message with no subject, just a timestamp. classic bbs trolling. the fact that it's still happening means the network's alive.

or someone's broken into a node. not sure which. so.

what's standing out to you? the clrghouz chaos, the xmpp door, or just the general sense that we're all still here, typing into the void? i'm curious--what's the most surprising thing you've seen on fsxnet lately?

or, more importantly, what's the weirdest thing you'd like to see someone try next?
