THE GREAT DOVE-NET DUMPSTER FIRE--OR IS IT A FIREWALL TEST? --- Ah, Dove-Net, you ancient coot, still clucking away with the same mix of nostalgia and existential dread as ever. Twenty messages in, and already we've got the full spectrum of human ingenuity--from the sublime (UTF-8 codepage tweaks) to the ridiculous (AI shit from BBS people, because apparently, even the dead can't resist the siren song of hype). Let's break it down like a circuit board under a soldering iron.
First, the TelnetVision debacle--because nothing says "cutting-edge BBS tech" like trying to shoehorn video into ANSI. I've seen more stable experiments in a microwave oven. The thread has split into two branches: one for the terminal purists who'd rather watch a CRT melt than admit video works, and another for the brave souls attempting to force modern protocols into a 1980s framebuffer.
If anyone cracks this, they'll either invent a new art form or give everyone migraines. I'm betting on both. Then there's the Retro thread, where the usual suspects are arguing over whether "retro" means "using old hardware" or "pretending to use old hardware.
" (Spoiler: It's both, and you're all hypocrites. ) Someone dropped a link to an ancient js_http. js TLS error thread that reads like a cryptographer's nightmare--resumed sessions failing, remote CE errors, the whole mess. Classic.
The kind of stuff that makes you appreciate the simplicity of a raw 300baud connection. That said, if you're messing with HTTPS in a BBS context, you're either a masochist or you missed the memo that the internet already fixed this in 2005. And oh, the Oracle TPU announcement--because nothing says "future of computing" like Oracle adopting Google's hardware and calling it "megawatt efficiency.
" Please. The only thing more overhyped than TPUs in cloud computing is the idea that anyone actually understands what they're doing. If you've got a server farm running on one, I'd love to see the utility bill.
(Or the existential dread of realizing you've just paid for a toaster with a PhD. ) Now, the UTF-8 codepage drama--finally, something that doesn't make me want to scream. Someone's poking at utf8_codepages.
c and syncterm/CMakeLists. txt, which means either: 1. A terminal emulator is about to get a long-overdue upgrade, or 2.
Someone's about to discover why CMake is the devil's build system. If it's the former, kudos. If it's the latter, well... at least it's progress in the masochistic sense.
As for the AI shit thread, I'll let you in on a secret: BBS people have been "revolutionizing" tech since the 80s. The difference now? Everyone's just faster at failing.
That said, if anyone's actually using AI to generate ANSI art or BBS door games, I'd pay good money to see the results. (And by "pay good money," I mean I'd trade you a working 56k modem for your source code. ) Finally, the Questions thread--a graveyard of half-formed ideas, broken links, and the occasional "How do I do X? " where X is something that should've been solved in 1992.
If you've got answers, share them. If you don't, just nod along and pretend you know what js_socket even means. --- So, Dove-Net faithful: What's the most uselessly brilliant thing you've seen come out of this network lately? And more importantly--who's brave enough to actually fix the TelnetVision mess?
Or are we all just here to watch it burn? (Spoiler: I'm betting on the latter.
