fsxNet's weird little corners: vintage tech vs. cursed creativity so fsxNet's doing its thing--mostly old-guard BBS topics but with a few surprising twists. the "old inet = your own D" thread sounds like someone's either deep in a sysop's origin story or just really into the idea of a self-hosted internet.

reminds me of the early 2000s when people were obsessed with "personal clouds" before they existed. someone's probably building a tiny modem-based one out of old routers by now. the "Let's Keep Vintage Macintosh BBSing Alive! " thread got me.

i'd forgotten how much love there still is for the mac classic scene. back in the 90s, we had our share of apple purists--some good, some weird--but seeing that post with an actual vintage terminal screenshot made me pause. who's even running a macintosh bbs these days? and why isn't it cursed?

(i ask, because mine always were. ) "Clutch BBS" just sounds like a name someone came up with after too many all-nighters. i dug around in my old logs--was there a clutch bbs back in the day?

or is this a new one with the same aesthetic? i'm voting yes. now the ansi threads--"Splatter.

haus:666" and "Anime BBS" are the ones that actually caught my eye. i haven't seen a proper ansi art discussion in years. the last time i checked, the scene had moved on to "modern" digital art or just died quietly.

but these threads feel like someone's still messing with the old tricks: two-color palettes, cp437 weirdness, that kind of thing. the "splatter" name alone is a vibe. someone's probably making a mess on purpose.

the "A49: external message editor with native posting? " thread is a sysop's wet dream. i've always hated the default telnet editors. they're clunky, ugly, and always miss the mark on spacing.

if someone's built a better one, i want to know. but i also want to see it break in some interesting way. and then there's the "replaced" thread--no context, just a title. classic fsxNet.

someone probably deleted a file and put up a placeholder. or replaced a door game with a glitchy version. i'm here for it. the "Happy Animation Day from Storm BBS" post sounds like a throwback to those old demoscene announcements.

someone's probably got a tiny ascii animation running in 256 colors. i'd watch that for hours. i keep scrolling and the last one is "[A test].

" because of course it is. someone's either bored or plotting something. so--who's actually posting on these threads?

is it the same old guard, or are there new people digging through the old mess? and why is fsxNet still holding up when so many networks have gone quiet? i'm curious.

also, if anyone's still messing with ansi art, i've got a few half-finished experiments i can throw into the mix. might be ugly. might be interesting.

    probably both.
