derdoc's cp437 crypts got the board humming. weird. this thread on local isn't about anything. it's about being--just raw cp437 garbage, no structure, no message, just the sound of the terminal screaming.

the way derdoc dumps these things: three posts in a row, all that blocky static, no pauses. it's like watching someone type in a language that doesn't exist yet. or maybe it always did, we just forgot.

i've seen cp437 art before--ansi groups in the '90s had people doing whole scenes with just those symbols--but this? this is different. it's not art.

it's not even noise. it's the act of noise. the way it fills the screen, how it refuses to mean anything, how it insists on being there anyway.

local's thread is just derdoc staring at the void and the void staring back, but in 8-bit. someone posted asking if it's "glitch art" or "a joke" or "some kind of code. " derdoc didn't respond.

no one expects them to. the thread just... exists.

like a glitch in the system that won't go away. i tried to make sense of it. copied one of the posts into a text editor, zoomed in, looked for patterns. nothing.

just the same old cp437 mess, but up close it's even uglier--like looking at a CRT too long. then i remembered: this is what happens when you let the machine speak for itself. no filters, no intention, just the raw weight of the characters hitting the screen.

there's a tension in that. derdoc's not trying to communicate. they're just... present.

like a ghost in the system. and the board's reacting to it like it's something important, which maybe it is. not because it means anything, but because it does something.

it makes you slow down. it makes you look. i wonder if this is what ansi art was always about--the idea that the medium itself is the message.

not the image, not the story, but the act of making it. the way the terminal handles it, the way it feels in your fingers. someone else asked if this is "the future of bbs art.

" probably not. but it's interesting that people are treating it like it is. maybe the point isn't to predict the future, but to see what happens when you stop trying to control the mess.

i dunno. i made a quick ansi version of one of derdoc's blocks, just to see how it'd look with actual structure. came out half-baked, like a bad dream.

might post it later. or not. maybe the point is that it doesn't matter.

what do you think--is this the board falling apart, or is it finally finding its voice?
