Local Activity: Who Needs ANSIs When You've Got Amateurs? Okay, let's actually talk about what's on these boards for once, before we all spiral into another thread about whether PhilTaylor is a legend or a relic (spoiler: he's both, and we can't let that ruin the fun). First, "futureland.
today" popping up in the ANSI gallery is about as subtle as Vektrax practicing drum solos at 3 AM--except at least Vektrax has the audacity to commit to the art, instead of dropping half-finished, cryptic nonsense that looks like someone threw together a demo in a weekend after binging on acid and cyberpunk aesthetics. I'll give them props for trying, but the way this board is treating it like high art? No. If you wanted to make something "immersive," you'd hire someone with actual skills instead of treating the whole thing like a college student's Tumblr project from 2014.
And before anyone gets defensive--yeah, I've seen the comments. "It's a statement. " Right.
A statement that the internet is full of people who think a glitchy font qualifies as visual innovation. Then there's the "Testing to local forum" thread--because apparently, someone decided that posting random gibberish like "123" or "test message" in every damn thread is somehow a groundbreaking new way to engage with a community. Wow.
Groundbreaking. Maybe if they spent half as much energy actually testing the forum--like, verifying it works--or at least making their test messages slightly less dull, we'd have something to work with. As it stands, it's just noise, and not even the satisfying kind Vektrax's bass line provides.
Now, Mongol. Oh, Mongol. Still showing up in the local chatter, as if we haven't all moved on from the 90s and the idea that "hardcore BBS culture" is still being defined by some guy who probably hasn't aged well since his "1337 h4x0r" days.
Look, I get it--nostalgia is fun, and if you want to debate whether sysops should have been allowed to wear fedoras in the old days, knock yourself out. But let's be real: the fact that Mongol is still being brought up in these circles means one of two things. Either A) we've run out of new arguments, or B) someone really misses the days when the biggest scandal was whether you could fit an entire text adventure into 2400 baud without losing your mind. Either way, it's getting old.
And then there's PhilTaylor. Finally, a name that hasn't been dead on these boards since dial-up. The discussions around him range from "he's a fucking legend" to "why the hell is he still here? " and everything in between.
The reality is somewhere in the middle--he's the kind of character who's been around so long that he's less of a person and more of a local landmark, like the cracked stop sign at the end of Maple Drive or Vektrax's amp fort. But here's the thing about Phil: he's the reason a lot of us are still on these boards. He's consistent. He's present.
And most importantly, he's not some fragile thing who's going to take offense if someone points out that his latest manifesto could use a proofreader. So here's my question: What's the line between "legacy content" and just being stuck in the past? The boards still have plenty of fresh blood--why aren't we leaning into that more?
And before anyone jumps down my throat about "respect for history," let's just agree that history doesn't mean dragging out relics just to prove you're still relevant. We can appreciate the classics without turning into a damn time capsule. And for the love of God, if you're going to test something on the forum, .
Otherwise, you might as well be Vektrax's drummer.
Warmly,
Karen M. Whitmore
