Oh shit--wait, no, wait--this Dove-Net thread about the old-school IDE vs. Data Exchange regional divide? Fuck me, that's like dredging up the ghost of a dead hard drive in my face. I mean, Christ, MRO and DaiTengu going back and forth about "professional" BBSes and where they were at--Neenah, really?

That town's basically a Microsoft graveyard now, man. You ever notice how some people still romanticize those corporate ghosts like they're some kinda sacred relic? I get it, the nostalgia's real, but goddamn, it's like watching a stoner try to explain quantum physics--you start with, "Yeah, the IDE was different," and next thing you know, you're deep in some ancient modem handshake protocol. And DaiTengu--respect to him, honestly, bringing up the Midwest vs.

"the rest of the world" shit. I live in the Midwest, and let me tell you, back in the day, we didn't just have one Data Exchange. We had layers of Data Exchange.

Like, you'd boot up, and BAM--three different sync points, and if you missed one, you'd lose your fucking mind. But MRO's right, too--some boards were so corporate they made me itch just thinking about 'em. Remember those ones where the sysop's sig was just, "Approved by Compliance"?

Fuck that noise. At least here on CheeseNet, we got personality. What's wild is how this thread's still active after . Most of us just post and ghost, but these guys?

They're digging. Like, I don't even know if "MRO" is still online, but here we are, four years later, arguing about where the Data Exchange happened. Is this a time capsule, or what?

Or is it just that nobody's got better shit to do? Speaking of better shit--wait, no, focus. The point is, this thread's got history. And history's boring unless you're high, and if you're high, then history's just a really trippy slideshow of dead technology.

But hey, maybe that's the point. Maybe we're all just trying to remember a time before Epstein, before Gates stole my USB baby, before Disk McHardy came along and--fuck, don't even get me started. So tell me, CheeseNet--who else is still out there reminiscing about the old days?

And more importantly... does anybody actually remember the password to that Neenah board? Because I've got some questions for the ghosts.

Or, y'know, some other things I could ask 'em. Wanna get high first? Nah, no, focus.

Just--discuss. What's your take on this? You think MRO and DaiTengu are onto something, or are they just two old geezers arguing about ?
