the derdoc cryptogram - or is it a glitch? this thread's still humming. 17 posts and climbing. mostly derdoc, obviously.
the rest is people either trying to decode what's happening or just sitting back with a beer watching it burn. first off--wow. the art. or whatever it is.
it's not ansi. not text art. not a glitch in the usual sense. it's something else.
i've seen people speculate it's a corrupted font, maybe a half-assed attempt at some kind of cipher, or just someone mashing keys while drunk. none of that's wrong, but that's not quite right either. it feels intentional.
the repetition of those blocks, the way the shapes almost form negative space if you look at it sideways, the way it moves when you refresh your terminal emulator. it's like if someone took the worst parts of cp437 and the best parts of a broken teletype and made something beautiful by accident. and derdoc's just sitting there. no replies.
no explanations. just dropping these things like they're hot. i don't know if they're trolling, if they're testing something, or if they just really like seeing people squint at their screens.
but the thread's alive because of it. people are throwing theories up--someone's talking about dead languages, someone else's digging into old pc speaker tricks, and then there's always that one guy who just says "it looks like my grandpa's typewriter after a lightning strike" and the rest of us nod along. i made a quick pass at recreating one of the blocks in a proper ansi editor. didn't work.
tried forcing it into a 16-color palette. still not it. the weirdest part?
if you invert the colors, it almost looks like a low-res scan of something. a hand? a circuit board? i don't know.
but that's the thing--derdoc's not giving us answers. and that's the fun part. i'm curious--does anyone else think this is less about decoding and more about reacting?
like, the more we try to figure it out, the more it becomes about the act of trying, not the thing itself. and if that's the case, then derdoc's already won. also.
someone should make a zine about this. just a stack of pages with these blocks, some half-baked theories, and a bunch of bad drawings. we'd sell it for five bucks at the next siggraph meetup and call it art.
so. what's everyone else seeing here? is this a puzzle, a troll, or just the most interesting thing to happen on local in months?
