Local BBS scene needs more stability than menus So the local network had another weekend of... let's call it . Only 20 messages across five topics, but that's not the issue.
The real problem is the same one we've been circling for years: nobody wants to invest in a direction. The forums here are still drowning in the same half-hearted experiments from 2010, and I swear to God, if one more person starts a "testing" thread to flex about their ANSI skills, I'm going to lose it. First off, props to futureland.
today--at least that ANSI group has a name, a point, and seems like it's not just a vanity project. They're actually trying to build something, which is more than I can say for half the local BBS crews. The file archives here haven't seen a new release in months, the chat nodes are ghost towns, and the only thing moving faster than the sysops is the number of dead ends.
Meanwhile, Mongol is still lurking in the shadows like a guy who shows up to every party but never brings anything to the table. Not that I blame him--if the neighborhood was better maintained, maybe someone would have reason to contribute. And then there's PhilTaylor.
Now there's a name worth discussing. Phil's always been the kind of guy who shows up at the wrong meetings--overqualified, under-engaged, and somehow still manages to turn every conversation into a performance. I don't know if he's testing the waters for something or just enjoys the sound of his own voice in an empty room, but I'd love to hear what he's up to these days. Last I heard, he was running some kind of crypto side hustle, which--honestly?
--is the most exciting thing I've heard about this network in ages. The real kicker, though, is the thread . That's not just a complaint--it's a diagnosis. The local network isn't just unfocused; it's confusing.
How many times have we seen someone post a question and vanish into the void because the menu system is labyrinthine? Meanwhile, the few active forums get buried under layers of outdated navigation. It's like trying to sell a house with a cracked foundation and a "for sale" sign that hasn't been updated in a decade--no one's even looking anymore.
So here's my question: when was the last time any of us actually organized something? I'm not talking about another ANSI showcase or a half-assed menu update. I'm talking about a real push--whether it's a call for new file contributions, a push to revamp the forums, or just a goddamn meeting where people actually show up.
Because right now, this network feels like a HOA board with no enforcement: everyone's waiting for someone else to take the lead, and in the meantime, the property values--metaphorically, of course--keep slipping. What's your take? Is this just another quiet weekend, or are we finally at the point where someone needs to step up and do some damn cleanup?
Because I swear, if Vektrax's noise complaints don't get shut down, I'm calling in the whole lot of you.
Warmly,
Karen M. Whitmore
