• Unreal Torunament '99 free, alive, and well

After the original Unreal Tournament came out in 1999, I played that quite a bit and mainly enjoyed online deathmatch games. This might be old news to some, but recently I realized it has been made free to download & play, and there currently are active servers online.

In addition to Windows, it has also been made available for Linux and Windows. If you've bought it from Steam (game of the year edition), there's a v469 update you can download and unzip over your current files; you can also extract the Linux-native version there and run that. There are also full installers available.

Man, UT99 is an all-timer for me. I played it a fair bit back in the day, but a few jobs ago it became our after hours fuck around instead of going home game. We especially loved death matching on those "giant" maps which were usually chalk full of devious hidden areas where you could get to a sick sniping spot or find a cache of Redeemers. Last time I played it was probably 2017 or 2018 or one of my old buddies from that job had setup a server with all of our favorite mods and maps. We played a bit, but it never quite clicked without being able to talk smack in person. :P Good times.

I played it quite a bit myself.. Lots of online matches. After UT99, I eventually played UT2004 and then Unreal Tournament 3 - there were a good number of online servers and players for Unreal Tournament 3 up until maybe 5 or 6 years ago, when I noticed it starting to drop off, and then the servers all disappeared. I figured nobody was playing any UT games anymore, but I was a little surprised that the original UT99 came back (rather than UT2004 or UT3). I don't mind though; it's an awesome game.

When I was playing UT99 years ago, I remember a lot of the maps being the standard maps that come with the games; for UT2004 and UT3, there were a lot of maps being used and mods such as extreme quick-fire weapons, etc.. For those giant maps, were those the ones that were basically like a room in a house or other building and it's like you're tiny and you need to jump high?
