• Data Roaming Switched Off, Question?

    Hi all,

Bit of a strange one. My wife, who's on 1p Mobile is currently on her
way to Africa. So before she left I switched data roaming off. She has a
1 hour stop in Switzerland and WhatsApp is still working there, so data
is obviously still on. That's fine for now, as Switzerland is free
(included in her boost) on 1p Mobile, but once she reaches her
destination then it will start costing.

Is this because 1p aren't classing this as roaming as it's included in
her boost? Will her phone (Samsung Galaxy A55) kill data once she's at
    her destination?

Turning off mobile data completely would solve things of course
(hopefully), but I'm curious as to why her phone is behaving like this?

    Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. No, she's got the 5G symbol on her phone, so
definitely got a mobile data connection. Also just logged into her 1p
Mobile account and it confirms data usage while roaming.

    Strange!

Did you disable data roaming on the phone itself, or on the 1p Mobile
    account portal (or both ?)

    Strange!

If you don't want to incur data roaming charges it's usually better to
turn off mobile data completely. I've had instances where even though
I've had data roaming switched off I've still incurred small amounts
    of data charges.

I believe this is because if you restart a phone some data sneaks
through before the phone has properly started up and turned off
    roaming data.

Also, switch of 4G and 5G connectivity (assuming 2G is available) as
that will prevent any use of VoLTE that might get mis interpreted as
    roaming data traffic ?

    On the phone itself.

Anyway she kept it in aeroplane mode until after landing in Africa and installed a local eSim. So avoided any charges and since then there has
been no data leaking via 1p.

I'll have a look at the phone when she gets home and see if somehow data roaming has switched itself back on.

Perhaps 1P Mobile doesn't treat Switzerland as roaming (assuming they treat
Switzerland as a roam like home destination).

1p are a bit odd. We were in Portugal, and I discovered that Mrs C
couldn't make any calls back to the UK. She could receive them fine, and
also send/receive SMS's. I had roaming enabled on her account, and
phone. I contacted 1P customer services, and they told me I also had to
enable 'International Calling' on the account too. That make no sense to
me, to my mind, that enables you to call an overseas number whist in the
UK, nothing to do with calling the UK while roaming abroad ? Anyway, I
did what they said, and it worked !
