New scam to me.
A call supposedly from BT Openreach (foreign accent) with something
about they have indications that my Internet connection is open to the public.
I asked "what about my VPN" and other protection systems. She did not
seem to have that in her script!
I hung up at that point.
Indian scammers have been claiming to be from BT Openreach for many years.
The fault they claim to have detected varies, but I think that they hope to persuade you to let install some sort of spyware on your system, supposedly
so they can fix your problem. Of course, the real BT Openreach never
contacts subscribers like that. Ditto with the similar Microsoft scam.
I guess you have the choice of hanging up or wasting their time. But I sometimes address them as Mr Scammer, and start asking them in which Indian city their scam call centre is located. Another fun question is to ask them
if their mothers are proud that their son/daughter earns their income as a thief. One that I keep meaning is to ask if itrCOs correct that in India, IT scamming is a reserved occupation for Dalits?
In one case, the chap admitted he was a scammer and said that it was
part-time evening work, and he tried to get legitimate IT jobs in normal (Indian) working hours. He admitted that not many people fell for the
scams.
