• Dumb AI chatbots

I purchased an item using Paypal. I received a message saying it had
been dispatched, and I could track it. This led to a page which told em
how to install the PayPal 'app' on my mobile. I do not use a
mobile 'phone except when I want to make a call, and anyway it does
not talk to the internet, but I always have access to my desktop PC.
There appears to be no way to install this 'app' onto a plain
computer. If there is, they do not explain how to do it. There is an
offer to send a text message with a link to my 'phone, which is my
non-mobile home 'phone. It receives text messages. I asked for the link
to be sent, I was told it had been sent, but there is still no message,
    30 minutes later.

What a mess. The next stage was to contact Chat.

The PayPal chatbot did not understand "How do I track an order using my computer?". I asked it to connect me to a Human, none were available,
on a Saturday morning, so it passed my question on to somewhere, it
would be answered in several hours' time. I might receive the order
    before I get a response.

    I am most unimpressed.

You can't track your package without the app which does not install on a desktop:-

    From:-

    https://www.paypal.com/us/cshelp/article/whats-paypal-package-tracking-help956

"PayPal's package tracking service is a feature exclusive to the PayPal
app. It can provide live updates and notifications to track your
shipments from the point of purchase to your door."

.. you can probably run it under an Android Emulator. I sometimes use BlueStacks

    https://www.bluestacks.com/

to run the Weight Watchers app since they removed the web version. I do
have it on my phone but the small screen is a pain..

I had ordered a replacement power cable for my dashcam, directly
from the manufacturer, and paid using PayPal. With this experience,
PayPal have not done anything to encourage my further use of them.

I received the cable before lunch, I have still to hear back from
PayPal concerning the issue of how to track it.

Going round in circles seems to be a feature of talking to AI Chatbots.
After I asked the question as quoted way above, it simply asked me again
    what I wanted help with.

I would have thought it was up to the vendor to provide tracking. I
thought the whole purpose of PayPal was t hide your card details from
    the vendor...

That was what I thought, I have only ever seen tracking from the vendor (obviously via the vendor).

Not that it usually tells you much, just the parcel has been collected
from the depot then days later that it is out for delivery.
Occasionally it arrives that day but more often the day after.

    You have choices.
You donrCOt have to use PayPal.
You donrCOt have to have a smart phone.

But your choices sometimes lead to results you donrCOt like.

ThererCOs obviously a need to provide essential services via multiple
methods, to accommodate those who canrCOt use the mainstream methods. But ordering stuff via PayPal doesnrCOt come under this. PayPal are under no obligation to offer a full service to those that deliberately opt out of
    owning a smartphone.

You can't track your package without the app which does not install on a desktop:-

If you have a tracking number you can likely throw it into: https://parcelsapp.com/

and it'll pull up the tracking information. Works for many couriers.

Although the developer is Russian so the KGB could ask for it too:

tracking. I thought the whole purpose of PayPal was t hide your
    card details from the vendor...

I agree, I was surprised to see it too. But if it is offered, it
    should work.

I possibly does -> if you can load thep on your smart phone

"I do not use a mobile 'phone except when I want to make a call,

Not everybody uses, or even has, a 'smart' phone. If Hermes can
make it work on my PC, so can PayPal.
And I still have not received the promised Text message with the
    link.

Complaint to PayPal, claim discrimination. Or buy a smart phone. Or
donrCOt use PayPal. They are your only realistic options.

They replied overnight, basically saying: 'that's the way it is,
    folks'. Wow.

    You have choices.
You donrCOt have to use PayPal.
You donrCOt have to have a smart phone.

But your choices sometimes lead to results you donrCOt like.

ThererCOs obviously a need to provide essential services via multiple methods, to accommodate those who canrCOt use the mainstream methods.
But ordering stuff via PayPal doesnrCOt come under this. PayPal are
under no obligation to offer a full service to those that
deliberately opt out of owning a smartphone.

No argument. But they did not make that clear when they offered me
Tracking of my purchase. It was only when I followed the procedure that
it failed to send me the promised link.

I purchased an item using Paypal. I received a message saying it

anyway it does not talk to the internet, but I always have access
to my desktop PC. There appears to be no way to install this
'app' onto a plain computer. If there is, they do not explain how
to do it. There is an offer to send a text message with a link to
my 'phone, which is my non-mobile home 'phone. It receives text
messages. I asked for the link to be sent, I was told it had been
sent, but there is still no message, 30 minutes later.

What a mess. The next stage was to contact Chat.

The PayPal chatbot did not understand "How do I track an order
using my computer?". I asked it to connect me to a Human, none
were available, on a Saturday morning, so it passed my question
on to somewhere, it would be answered in several hours' time. I
might receive the order before I get a response.

    I am most unimpressed.

You can't track your package without the app which does not install
    on a desktop:-

    From:-

    https://www.paypal.com/us/cshelp/article/whats-paypal-package-tracking-help956

"PayPal's package tracking service is a feature exclusive to the
PayPal app. It can provide live updates and notifications to track
your shipments from the point of purchase to your door."

If you have a tracking number you can likely throw it into: https://parcelsapp.com/

and it'll pull up the tracking information. Works for many couriers.

Although the developer is Russian so the KGB could ask for it too:

I think I'll steer clear of that one, thanks. I see lots of protections
for the developer, does it offer similar protections (in theory, at
    least) for the user?

This whole PayPal business only came about because they offered me
Tracking. Without that, I would have waited until such time as the
sender provided a tracking number and courier name. But because PayPal
offered it earlier, in fact when it confirmed my purchase, I tried to
use their system, but found, the hard way, that it was 'smart' 'phone application only.
In the end, it arrived the next day, courtesy of Royal Mail, and
earlier in the day than our local Amazon Prime delivers!

I don't use PayPal for credit card protection, I use it when it is
convenient to do so. Especially with merchants that I do not recognise.

ThatrCOs a sensible use. PayPal, Apple and Google Pay are all methods of ensuring that the merchant doesnrCOt get your credit card details. Apple and Google Pay do give you section 75 protection. (-u100 to -u30k).
