I was with the local vicaress yesterday when someone came up and
confided in her about some problem. "Pray to St ...." she said - and
promptly prayed out loud to this blighted saint!

    Talk about idolatry!

Afterwards I made some half-joking comment about how I always go to the
top when I need help, but she didn't seem abashed.

I've never understood why, when we are encouraged to call God "Father",
we would insult Him by sending a message at second-hand! Why would our
Father need special pleaders when He loves us and constantly wants to do
    what is best for us?

    God bless,

Oh dear, now I'm worried, I happen to be in agreement with you.

I don't even get why we have saints anyway. Throughout history many
Christians have gone above and beyond, and will no doubt have furthered
the Christian cause, but does that make them any more venerable?

This is shocking! I'll have to start praying to saints!!!

All Christians are saints - assuming that their Christianity is genuine
and so on - but equally, all Christians are imperfect, some perhaps more
so than others. It is invidious for us to claim that some of them are
"saints" of greater holiness than the rest of us.

Of course the Catholic church claims to have a process whereby prayers
to this proto-saint have resulted in at least two miracles. The question
they cannot answer, however, is whether God would have answered those
prayers had they been directed straight to Him?

    God bless,
