Mens rea is usually required, but not always. For example, speeding. The prosecution doesn't have to show you intended to speed.

Not strictly true. If you can show that you had a good reason for
speeding - rushing a sick child to hospital, for example - you stand a
good chance of being let off.
So, you're actually happy with the outcome in Ricky Jones's case. If the
law had been different, LC might have got off, but I'm not sure, as she
had quite a history of inflammatory posts.
My complaint has always been the difference in the two outcomes. Either
both should have been convicted and served time, or both should have
    been let off.

It wasn't difficult. There are similar stories all the time. What
puzzles me is that you, apparently, have gone through life without ever encountering one. It does pay to keep up to date, you know. It's what I
try to do, both with the news and with science.

From an article discussing the reliability of fingerprint evidence.

"A new proficiency test, designed in conjunction with the International Association for Identification, was conducted by an independent testing service starting in 1995 And that first test yielded this horrible error
rate of 22% for false positives - matching a print to the wrong print.
In the law enforcement context that could mean a false conviction."
