• FOAK SSD failure almost resolved

    From Pete Fisher@nospam@nospam.net to uk.rec.motorcycles on Mon Dec 15 11:48:30 2025
    From Newsgroup: uk.rec.motorcycles

So the SSD on my Optiplex9020 appeared to have failed (not showing in BIOS)following a power cut. Except after investing ten quid in a
USB/SATA adapter I can read it out of the box.

I had checked the power and data cables several times. So I'm guessing
the SATA port it was connected to is FUBAR?

I will try connecting it to the other one, now I have taken the HDD out
    and see what happens.

Next problem is I can't copy a lot of the folders like 'Program Files'.
AI suggests some kind of nuke from orbit command line fix.

    takeown /f X:\ /r /d y
    icacls X:\ /reset /t /c
    icacls X:\ /grant YourUserName:(OI)(CI)F /t /c

Using the file explorer advanced settings appeared to change ownership
bit the I got an error when trying to give permission to the
administrator if the machine the SSD is currently plugged in to.

Reluctant to try the AI fix yet, but does it look sane?

I think I'll try a reboot with just the SSD on the other port (Linux
    could see the HDD) first.

I use something similar when One Drive occasionally goes tits up. ie. it
keeps synchronising in some kind of infinite loop.

    takeown /F E:\ME\Onedrive

    -atakeown /F E:\ME\Onedrive /r /d y

    -aicacls E:\ME\Onedrive /grant Administrators:F

    -aicacls E:\ME\Onedrive /grant Administrators:F /t

and it works, fucknose how but it does without initiating any doomsday
scenarios. Takes a while mind. I think it 'just' resets file permissions on
    each individual file.
IIWY I would do that first, secure your data and then proceed with other
    strategies.

Best I draw a veil over what ensued. I've managed to get some files off

Anyway, I thought I would improve the shining hour by switching from the German server to Eteranl September before it was too late.

In fact, the carnage was the total destruction of the system partition
on the SSD. Not that big an issue as I didn't want to resuurect the
machine (old and not W11 compliant). It might make a decent Ubuntu box
or NAS if the HDD SATA port is OK (Puppy Linux could read the drive).
Trying not to accumulate even more boxes though. it was the files on the
'C' drive that I am keen to recover. Not vital but it would be good if I
could get some of the Visual Studio projects off. A lot were backed up,
    but not every version.

Managed to take control of the user folder by accepting windows offer to
let me see them and have made copies OK. No error messages now, but for
some reason File Manager is barfing on the mega folders, but coping with
some subfolders OK. Weird, but at least some nuggets of data are being
    raked from the ashes.
