Doing a simple transaction with Land Registry today, and the only way
they'll accept the u7 fee is by snail-mailing a cheque.

They've only just stopped using quill pens and are dabbling with the
idea of getting some of these new-fangled typewriters.

(You can tell I'm not impressed with their service)

But they do offer a free alert service which sends you an email once a
year telling you whether there have been any official (whatever that
means) searches and applications are made for your property. That does
seem to work in that I've had a few annual emails saying that nothing is amiss.
So at least one part of their organisation has advanced their technology
    to say around 1985.

And Roland didn't specify the kind of transaction.

    Online?

He went to their office but brought no cheque?

They may have had one of those newfangled telephonic apparatuses installed.

Odd; I assume it's the fee for a title search? I've done a few of those
in recent years and a debit card was accepted ...

I got something from Scottish equivalent last month. Just checked and I
paid by credit card, I think I might have needed my mygovscot login.

    Weird.

Not for everything though, I've ordered property details from them in
2015 and 2020 for about that sort of amount, but on line, and that was
    by credit card.

Routine for non account holders needing something in
"official"/certified form. Perhaps a difference involving the ability
to sue on a cheque ?

It's a slightly more specialised service than that. But I have done
title searches online before, and yes you can pay for those by card.

Last time I put my personal vehicle plate on a retention certificate,
DVLA would only accept a cheque. I haven't looked recently to see if
they've emerged into the 21st Century.
