    I met him once. It was after the first night of The Real Inspector
    Hound, he was wearing a velvet jacket and embraced me warmly. I was
    seventeen and unprepossessing, but I had written to him (having fallen
    in love with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern the year before) to ask him to
    judge our sixth-form poetry competition. He had said yes, as long as he
    didn't actually have to come and give the prizes (which we found very
    fair in the circumstances), and appeared delighted to meet me. I was completely dazzled, as much by the velvet voice as by the velvet jacket.
    And he kept his promise, though I can't for the life of me remember who won.

    Put this on Faceache the other day but not sure how many umrats are
    there any more, so thought I would flash here too. A very fond memory.

    Sometime at the end of the 60s our English teacher felt that a
    competition of mini-plays would be an interesting exercise and felt that
    his class should do part of Rosencrantz and Guildenstein are dead.
    Looking back it must have been about the time the play had achieved
    major success - but it meant nothing to me. Drafted to play a part it
    still meant nothing.

    One of my class mates (I wonder where Dave ended up - I last heard of
    him working in California) decided to lead a small rebellion and found a
    one act comedy which he led with no teacher involvement and we all both understood it and had a great time. I am not entirely sure the English teacher ever forgave us.
