I've been wondering: is Susan using the George situation as a
no-loss-of-face way of retiring from the shop? She has been doing it for
a Long Time, and maybe not enjoying it as much as she once did (and
several people think she still does).
I meant the character, but there's also the possibility of her best
friend; she too (obviously) has been doing it for a Long Time, and maybe
wants either a rest or to pursue her other interests (which are many) more.
